Thailand

This sandstone gable at Phrathat Narai Cheng Weng (fig.) depicts Narai banthom sin (fig.), i.e. Narai reclining (fig.) on the serpent Ananta during his cosmic sleep, a scene also referred to as Anantasayin (fig.), whilst the lintel underneath depicts a scene in which a figure said to be Krishna, the eight avatar of Vishnu, grabs and subdues a lion.

Another gable depicts Nataraja (fig.), a representation of Shiva as the ‘Lord of Dance’. Standing on one leg with the other in the air, he represents cosmic truth and the destructive energy with which he dances at the end of each cosmic age. The lintel underneath depicts a royal figure riding an elephant.
