  gilded lacquer making

Thailand

A skilled fine arts artist is creating a gilded lacquer design (fig.) by applying the outlines of a Thai mythological figure in a ‘pasty resist’ onto the polished lacquered surface of a window panel at the wihaan of Wat Hua Lampong (fig.). Later the whole surface will be coated with a resin and gold leaf applied, which will stick on the outlined pattern. Then the surface is gently washed with water removing the resist and leaving the gold leaf fixed to the design.
