HISTORY & MONARCHY

Memorial Bridge in the past (scale model)

Thailand

A scale model of Bangkok's Memorial Bridge (fig.) in the past, also known as the Phra Phutta Yotfa Bridge or Rama I Bridge (fig.), of whom a statue is erected at the head of the bridge (fig.).

It since 1932 connects Rattanakosin with Thonburi, across the Chao Phraya River (fig.). It was built to celebrate the 150 year anniversary of the Chakri dynasty, and thus connected both places. As that very same year also the absolute monarchy came to an end, many read in this a fulfillment of the curse of Taksin, who said that the power of General Chakri would come to an end if Thonburi, the ancient capital under Taksin, would ever be connected with Rattanakosin, the new capital established by Rama I, i.e. General Chakri.
