The fact that pig's heads are often part of Chinese offerings may perhaps be attributed to Zhu Bajie, i.e. Pigsy from the story Journey to the West, as at the end of the pilgrimage he was relegated to cleaning the altars of Buddhist temples as a punishment for his bad behaviour.
