A man discarding half-burned candles and joss sticks at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok (fig.), a shrine not dedicated to the three- or multi-headed elephant of Indra, but a spirit house with a statue of Brahma that belongs to the adjacent Erawan Hotel.

 

It also has a fertility corner with large wooden phalluses called pladkik (fig.), where couples come to pray for a pregnancy. Joss sticks or incense sticks and usually made of bamboo rolled in a sticky, dough-like mixture of oil and cinnamon, and dipped in sandalwood powder to enhance combustion.
