  chedi saai

Thailand

A chedi saai is a pagoda made of sand usually topped with small paper tung and paper flags, known as cho. The practice derives from the religious rite of khon saai khao wat (fig.), in which people annually bring sand back to the temple, as compensation for the sand that has been carried out from temple grounds over the past year, sticking to visitors feet.
