Thailand

Wat Sri Suphan is a Buddhist temple in the city of Chiang Mai, which was established in the year AD 1501 during the reign of Phaya Meuang Kaew.

Over the centuries, temple's ubosot has undergone multiple reconstructions, the last one between 2004 and 2015, now incorporating embossed silverwork, known in Thai as kaan salak dun (fig.).

These aluminum-and-silver decorations are crafted by Lan Na artisans using primarily alloy materials, notably silver. Hence, despite its name, which literally means ‘Prestigious Golden Temple’ the temple is today actually nicknamed the ‘Silver Temple’.

The ubosot enshrines a sacred Buddha statue known as Phraphutta Pathihahn and formerly as Phra Chao Chet Teu, i.e. the so-called Miraculous Buddha.
