an autumnal religious festival during the tenth lunar month,
in which ancestors and deceased relatives are honoured and
snacks, such as
krayahsaad
(fig.)
and
khanom lah
(fig.)
are offered. It is exuberantly celebrated annually
at Wat
Mahathat Wora Maha Wihaan in Nakhon
Sri Thammarat. The
four designs depict: 1. some of the
five snacks used as a traditional offering to monks
and which represents the offerings of clothes to the spirits
of the dead, such as
khanom lah,
khanom bah
or
krayahsaad,
khanom phong,
khanom dih sam,
khanom kai pla
or
khanom kong;
2.
souls of the deceased
released from hell; 3. a monk with an offering of a large
sheet of
khanom lah
that has been shaped
into a tall cone; 4. a crowd of people around some
snacks that are used as a traditional offering to monks and
the
spirits of the dead, who temporarily ascend
from hell in order to accept offerings and honours of their
relatives on earth during the festival |
