Longboat races
are a
Thai traditional sport in which several teams vie with each
other in a rowing race with a longboat, called reua yao in
Thai. It reflects the way of life of people who live near
the river and takes place in many regions of Thailand, after
the Buddhist festival of
thod kathin,
when water levels are at their highest. This is a period in
which local people are free from labour in the fields and
have time to make merit (tamboon),
and are enticed into boat races for fun. The first stamp of
this set is of
Dragon Boats,
i.e.
dragon-headed
longboats on the
Nan
River (fig.). |
