  Mieu Gate

Mieu Mon is a triple paifang gate or memorial archway in Hue's Citadel (fig.), in yellow, red, blue and green and with overlapping roofs.

 

It dates from 1822 and is decorated with highly symbolic themes. such as the Four Holy Animals (fig.), namely a Five-clawed dragon (fig.), the kilen, the turtle, and the phoenix.

Included are also the Four Seasons and Four Sacred Symbols. These consist of the plum or apricot blossom, symbol for winter; the orchid which represents spring; bamboo which indicates summer; and the chrysanthemum which stands for autumn. In addition, there are  peaches, symbols of longevity; scrolls; and fish, symbols of good luck and fortune.
