  Lui Im Yi Vegetarian Temple

Thailand

Lui Im Yi, a serene and secluded Thai-Chinese vegetarian temple, that is nestled at the foot of a large mountain known as Bijia Shan, in Prachuap Khirikhan. In Mandarin, it is called Leiyin Si, i.e. ‘Thunder-clap Monastery’, named after a temple in the story Journey to the West (fig.).

This shrine, in the form of a junk, symbolizes the Chinese diaspora, whose ancestors typically emigrated by boat. It commemorates the long and challenging journeys undertaken by Chinese emigrants, who typically rely on Mazu (fig.), the Chinese sea goddess, for protection.
