			which translates as the 
			‘Canal that Encircles 
			the City’, as it 
			semi-encircles 
			
			
			Rattanakosin in the east and 
			together with the 
    
		Chao Phraya River 
			in the west 
			completely 
			
			 surrounds the old 
			part of the city, making it in fact an island, which is consequently 
			referred to as 
			
			Koh
