Lan diao is the
ancient Chinese folk art of olive-pit carving,
that consists of the skillful chiseling of olive pits into miniature carvings of
historical themes and legends.
The artists takes
advantage of the natural shape of the olive nut, which
often led to the nut being carved into a boat.

Olive boat carvings
can take any form and shape,
from small fishing boats to pleasure boats and large
dragon
boats.
The carvings can be so elaborate, that any windows can
be opened and closed with ease, whilst some boats have
their flanks carved with inscriptions of prose and
poetry.
