Buddha nursing a feverish sick monk

Thailand

This rare Buddha image at Wat Laksi Raht Samohson (fig.) in Samut Sakon, depicts the Buddha in a standing pose and carrying a sick monk (fig.). It refers to a story recorded in the Vinaya Pitaka, in which the Buddha personally nursed a monk at a monastery, who was sick with a fever. Although there were many other monks at the monastery, he was neglected by the others. Hence, the Buddha personally nursed him and thus demonstrated compassion whilst emphasizing the duty to care for the sick.
