Kurma
The tortoise Kurma, i.e. the second avatar of Vishnu (fig.), which appears in the story of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk (fig.).
In this narrative the Kurma supports the churning stick with its carapace in order to prevent it from sinking in the soft soil (fig.). Hence, the tortoise became a symbol of stability in Hindu tradition.
