  Red-necked Keelback

This colourful snake, near Sai Yok National Park in Kanchanaburi province, is known as a Red-necked Keelback and is recognizable by the greenish hue with yellow and red regions in the vicinity of its neck and throat.

It grows to over a meter in length and typically dwells near rivers and pools, where it hunts for frogs. This rear-fanged species was previously thought to be harmless, but following a fatality due to its venomous bite, the toxicity of its poison was investigated and as a result it was re-classified as dangerous.

VENOMOUS! This snake carries an intense hematoxic venom that contains procoagulants, anticoagulants and haemorrhagins, and its bite may be fatal! Its bite may cause local pain, swelling, coagulopathy and haemorrhage, with dizziness, collapse or convulsions. All cases should be treated as urgent and potentially lethal. Antivenom Code: SAsJSI01
