A lak meuang is the city pillar in which the guardian spirit of a city dwells, and here, in the capital Bangkok, the shrine, known in Thai as sahn lak meuang, also contains a second pillar housing the guardian spirit of the nation. From this point the distance between other Thai cities is measured.
