A portrayal of the exceptional efforts made by King Rama IX in the preservation and enhancement of soil resources for the betterment of people's lives, recognized on an international scale. On 16 April 2012, the leadership of the International Union of Soil Sciences gathered to present the Humanitarian Soil Scientist award to King Bhumipol Adulyadej. As the inaugural recipient of this prestigious award, he sought royal approval to designate December 5th, the King's birthday, annually as World Soil Day. The United Nations officially declared this day in 2013, marking the initiation of events commemorating World Soil Day for the first time in 2014.
