The highlight at Wat Buri Ratchawanaram in Ratchaburi is a large Buddha statue in the pahng proht Alavaka yak pose (fig.), in which the Buddha pacifies Alavaka, a man-eating ogre (fig.).

 

The temple is nestled in natural surroundings known as Hub Pha Sawan, i.e. ‘Heaven Valley’, a name also used to refer to the adjacent hill, where visitors can climb the 365 steps to the summit, where more trails and panoramic views await.

At the summit, the path is divided into seven zones, each representing different religions and beliefs, including Buddhism, Christianity, and Hinduism. Along the way are sacred structures and statues, such as this pagoda known as Santi Chedi.
