Asiatique
Name of a
night bazaar located along at
the riverfront of the lower
Chao Phraya
River in
Bangkok
and situated in the former docks of the
East Asiatic Company (fig.)
on
Charoen Krung
Road (fig.).
It features ca. 1,500 shops and stalls, and 40
restaurants, most of which are housed in the former warehouses.
Other historical items include an old sawmill, a WWII bomb shelter,
and a replica of Bangkok's former tram system. The site is also host to the
Bangkok Ferris Wheel, a
60 meter high
sky wheel (map
-
fig.),
as well as a number of entertainment venues, such as Calypso Cabaret
(fig.)
and the Joe Louis
(Jo Liu) Puppet Theater
(fig.).
The site is fully known as Asiatique The Riverfront and opened in
April 2012 as a substitute for the Suan Lum Night Bazaar near
Lumphini Park
(fig.),
which had shut down in 2010. In 2020, a replica of the historical
Sirimahannop,
a three-masted sailing ship
with a length of 58.5
meters (fig.),
was permanently docked at
Asiatique's riverside, and
operates as a bar and restaurant.
