  Taoist Immortal flying on crane

Vietnam

This mural in the Cantonese Assembly Hall in Hoi An (fig.) shows a Xian, i.e. a Taoist Immortal, flying on a crane (fig.), a bird normally associated with Han Hsiang Tzu (fig.).

The Immortal is holding a peach, a symbol of longevity (fig.) and some Peony (fig.), the national flower of China, and while the conifers in this mural also represent longevity, the bats are symbols for good luck.
