HISTORY & MONARCHY

  Stone of Ramkhamhaeng

Thailand

The famous Stone of Ramkhamhaeng, a stele shaped like a small pyramidal obelisk with an epigraph and officially designated as Inscription No. 1, was discovered by Mongkhut (fig.) at Prasat Hill in Sukhothai on 17 January 1833 (BE 2376). The text on this monolith partially recounts the rule of King Ramkhamhaeng (fig.) and the so-called Bell of Ramkhamhaeng (fig.), though its authenticity remains a subject of scholarly debate.
