  Songkraan wet talcum powder

Thailand

Songkraan festival is celebrated by smearing each others face with paeng dinsoh phong, small rosette-like rocks or swirls of marl (fig.), that are dissolved in water and become a cream-like substance that can be applied to the face and body.

Besides this also dry talcum powder is lavishly thrown around, creating large dusty clouds (fig.), in addition to exuberantly tossing water (fig.).

During the three day festival everyone is considered a legitimate target, including officers of the Royal Thai Police (fig.), though they definitely know how to fight back in self-defence (fig.).
