PROVINCIAL ESCUTCHEON

Samut Sakon

The coat of arms of Samut Sakon shows a Chinese sampan boat at sea. In the Ayutthaya period trading vessels would first moor in this port. The majority of these ships came from China, which made the local population nickname the harbour Tha Jihn, i.e. ‘China Harbour’. The escutcheon thus refers to a memory from the past.
