An adult
male
Plain-pouched Hornbill
at Jurong Bird Park in Singapore. The shape of its
ridged casque is reminiscent of an elephant's molar (fig.),
and stands at the origin of its name in Thai, i.e.
nok ngeuak
krahm chang pahk riab, which translates as
‘smooth-billed elephant's molar
hornbill’.
