The Chinese character wang (王) consists of three horizontal strokes and one vertical.

It is a pictograph in which the top horizontal stroke represents ‘heaven’, the bottom stroke ‘earth’ and the middle stroke the ‘emperor’ or ‘king’, as the liaison between heaven and earth, a task symbolized by the vertical stroke.
