HISTORY & MONARCHY

  Phraya Phakdi Chumphon

Thailand

Phraya Phakdi Chumphon was a 19th-century governor of Chaiyaphum known for his loyalty and bravery during Prince Anuwong’s rebellion against the Rattanakosin Kingdom in 1826. When Anuwong attacked Nakhon Ratchasima in an attempt to secede from Siam, Phraya Phakdi Chumphon supported Khun Ying Mo (fig.), i.e. Lady Suranari  (fig.), and the people of Nakhon Ratchasima in resisting the Lao forces.

His refusal to side with the rebels led to his capture and execution by Anuwong under a tamarind tree at Nong Pla Thao. Despite his death, he is remembered as a hero, and a monument was established in his honour in 1975.
