The escutcheon of
	Nakhon Phanom
shows the 57 meters high
stupa of
Phrathat
Phanom in Laotian style,
which contains a relic (breastbone) of the Buddha. It is the most important
place of worship in
Isaan
and also draws worshippers from Laos. The location of the city was in the past
of strategic importance and it was at one time the capital of a
regional kingdom called Sri Kohtraboon.
