As all other pit vipers, the Malayan Pit Viper is distinguished by the presence of a heat-sensing pit organ, located between the eye and the nostril on either side of the head.

VENOMOUS! This snake has a strong hemotoxic venom and is deadly! Without administration of serum death can occur after just one hour. Severe envenoming is possible and potentially lethal. Its bite causes significant local injury at the bite site, with local pain, severe swelling, bruising, blistering, and moderate to severe necrosis. Generally envenoming may cause moderate to severe coagulopathy and haemorrhagins, triggering extensive bleeding, and renal failure. General symptoms may include headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dizziness, collapse or convulsions. All cases should be treated as urgent and potentially lethal.
