The Longmen
Grottoes are a
group of
Buddhist caves
near the Chinese
city of Luoyang,
dating mostly
from the Tang
Dynasty.
There are ca.
1,400 caves and
100,000 statues,
but the main
attraction is a
17.14 m high
representation
of the
Vairochana
Buddha
(fig.),
carved to
resemble the Empress
Wu Ze Tian (fig.).
