Painted Jezebel

Common name for a medium-sized butterfly, with the binomial name Delias hyparete. There exist several subspecies, of which Delias hyparete metarete and Delias hyparete indica also occur in Thailand. Above its forewings are mainly light to dark greyish-blue with black margins and veins, with some lighter grey on the hindwings, whilst on the underside the forewings are similar as above, but darker, whereas the hindwings are largely yellow, with some white and orange on the outside and also bordered with black margins and veins. The pattern and colouring may differ slightly, depending on the species and sex, with females usually somewhat darker than in males and with less yellow on the underside of the hindwings (fig.). In Thai it is called phi seua non kah fahk thammada.
