  Kham Chanoht

Thailand

Kham Chanoht is a forest temple in Udonthani that is idyllically located in the middle of a field surrounded by water, inside a ca. 200 meters wide grove of Taraw Palms (fig.), which in Thai are called ton chanoht, hence the temple's name.

This basically puts this forest temple, at least in part, on an island, which makes this part with the inner sanctum only accessible by an elongated naga-bridge, that is flanked with a nine-headed naga on either side, and which is a landmark in its own right within the temple complex (fig.).

This overall green-and-golden naga forms the balustrade and allows for a safe passage over the water, as this mythological serpent is not only the guardian of the Buddha, but also the protector of the earthly waters.
