The similarly looking Heliconia rostrata, Heliconia bihai, Heliconia collinsiana and Heliconia velutina are some species of heliconia with red and yellow hanging flowers.

Due to the shape of their individual flowers and pendant inflorescences they are nicknamed Hanging Heliconia, Large or Big Lobster Claw, and Fishtail Heliconia.
