Common Castor and its caterpillars on Castor Oil Plant

PREVIOUS BUTTERFLY NEXT BUTTERFLY Nepal

Caterpillars  of the Common Castor feed almost exclusively on the leaves of the Castor Oil Plant, the plant from which the butterfly got its name. The larvae are green with bristly spikes and a yellowish line along the back.

This yellowish line is flanked by dark lines in more mature individuals that are nearing pupation. Although the leaves of this specific plant were almost completely consumed by the young insects.

The presence of a nearby Common Castor butterfly indeed facilitated identification of both the plant and the caterpillars.
