  Black Pipe Trail

Malaysia

The Black Pipe Trail, located adjacent to Penang Botanic Garden (fig.), is a scenic forest path that follows an old pipeline, winding through dense greenery and providing a secluded hiking experience for those seeking a deeper connection with nature. The pipe runs alongside the path, partially buried in some sections and exposed in others. With occasional steep and narrow passages, the trail presents a moderately challenging trek.

Dating back to the British colonial era, this old cast iron water pipeline was once part of Penang’s early water supply infrastructure, used to transport water from the island’s reservoirs to Georgetown (fig.).
