PREVIOUS BIRD NEXT BIRD Thailand

These Barn Swallows, spotted perching at the World War II Museum and the adjacent Thai History Museum in Kanchanaburi, are of the subspecies Hirundo rustica gutturalis.

Whereas adults of the nominate race have a broad dark bluish-black breast band, this subspecies has an incomplete breast band, in which the rufous colour of the forehead, chin and throat is partly extended. In addition to the bluish-black upperparts, the rufous colour of the forehead, chin and throat, and the off-white underparts of the nominate race, Hirundo rustica gutturalis also have pinkish-buff lower underparts.
