The Artillery
Monument, built on the slope of a mountain in Dien Bien
Phu, a province in the northwestern region of
Vietnam,
bordering
Laos.
A small cannon,
i.e. an infantry support gun, is visible on the right
side of this war memorial, hence its designation. It was
in these mountains that the Vietnamese in 1954 defeated
the French.

event led to
the end of French presence in Vietnam, as well as to the
accords that partitioned the country into North and
South.
