The wavy
shape of a
termite mound
increases the surface area and thermal mass, providing a
cooling system during the day, as well as a heating
system at night
by flattening out the daily temperature fluctuations.
This is
possible
since the thermal mass will
absorb thermal energy when the
surroundings are higher in
temperature than the mass, and
give thermal energy back when
the surroundings are cooler.
