The dried, plum-like fruits of the samrong, a tree with the scientific name Scaphium macropodium and commonly known as Malva Nut Tree, are sold in bulk at Bangkok's Chinatown.

These look samrong, i.e. ‘samrong fruits’ or Malva nuts, are used as a herb in traditional medicine to improve general health, as well as to treat certain respiratory conditions and other ailments, such as cough, phlegm, sore throat, apthous ulcers and fever.
