A derivative of the ancient Chinese custom of exposed beams over doorways (fig.), that indicates the status of the resident according to the number of beams, can be observed in Vietnam, where wooden circular ornaments are placed over the doors.

LOCATION DIRECTIONS

 

The two ornaments with floral motifs in the picture above are in a merchant mansion, while the two ornaments in the picture on the right are those at a temple, both in the village of Hoi An. The wooden name signs over the doorways are known as miao minge.
