Burning coconut oil is said to give a smokeless flame and coconuts are a typical offering during the Hindu festival of Vijayadazaami (fig.), in which they are used as coconut candles.

Being midair fruits with unadulterated juice they are seen as immaculate and piled up along the street to provide a pure path for the gods when the procession passes by.
