  bindi in iconography

India

A statue at one of the Hindu temples in Kajuraho, which is part of the Kajuraho Monuments (fig.). It depicts a young woman applying a bindi and sindura hair stripe (fig.), thus indicating her marital status.

She is holding a rounded bowl of brass, which she uses as a mirror. This sculpture is proof that the tradition of applying a red dot and hair stripe by married Hindu women is indeed longstanding, said to date back to ancient Aryan society.
