Bao gai,
literally
‘precious canopy’,
is the Chinese
name for a ceremonial umbrella or parasol, typically attached to a
long pole and decorated with a tubular cloth fringe featuring
elaborate embroidery, which serves as a symbol of royal authority
and spiritual protection. It is typically used in
Mahayana
Buddhism and
Taoism,
where it is
carried along with
statues of deities in processions, or placed at their altars.
