The fruit of the avocado tree (fig.) is known as avocado pear and previously also as alligator pear, due to the pear-like shape and its rough pebbled skin texture.

However, avocados may also be egg-shaped or spherical and the name avocado is said to derive from the Aztec word ahuácatl which means ‘testicle’.
