West Indian Mahogany, or simply Mahogany, is a large tree that grows up to 25 meters high and that is renowned for its dark-coloured hardwood. In Thai, it is generally known as mahokkanih.

 

The tree is most easily recognized by its woody seed pods that when ripe break open from the bottom.

There are two genuine varieties, of which one is known as Small-leaf Mahogany and the other as Big-leaf Mahogany.
