Thailand

Wat Khao Din in Suphanburi is a Japanese-styled Thai temple located on a hilltop, that exemplifies the hybridisation of Thai religious architecture with imported Japanese aesthetic and symbolic elements.

Its Japanese themed landscape incorporates torih-style gateways, pictorial representations of Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms, and the prominent display of symbolic figurines, such as the beckoning cat Maneki-neko and Daruma dolls.

The temple’s ubosot is located at the base of the mountain, and in front of it stands a statue of King Naresuan, who in 1593 defeated the Burmese Crown Prince in a celebrated elephant duel during the Battle of Nong Sarai in this province (fig.).
