ART & LITERATURE

  Thong Yod

Thailand

Thong Yod, literally ‘Golden Drops’. Name of a work of art by Arin Roongjaeng (อริญชย์ รุ่งแจ้ง), inspired by a traditional Thai candy of the same name in the form of droplets made of egg yolk and rice flour.

It consists of a gigantic golden sphere with a diameter of four metres which is made up entirely of over 6,000 brass drops hung from the ceiling on thin nylon fishing line wires.

The masterpiece was originally displayed at the Venice Biennale in 2013 and two such spheres now hang in Icon Siam (fig.) in Bangkok.

The patterns of the blank spaces in between the designs formed by the strings of consecutive brass drops changes as one moves position and thus the viewing angle in relation to the sphere, making it a fascinating object to observe over and over again.
