Legend has it that one starry night, a Golden Mermaid was at the beach combing her hair with a golden comb, when she was scared away by a young fisherman and dropped her comb.

Smitten by her beauty, the fisherman came back to the beach every night, with the comb, but she never returned. This famous mermaid is seated on a rock outcrop at Laem Samila in Songkhla and  is reminiscent of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark. In December 2018, the statue was damaged, i.e. the mermaid lost her tail, in a double bomb explosion linked to the southern unrest related to the Islamic separatist insurgency, in which also the nearby Cat & Mouse Sculpture (fig.) was damaged.
