mai hok hian (ไม้หกเหียน)

Thai. ‘Turning six tree’. A small manipulated tree or shrub, with a bare trunk and a few bare branches that only have bushes of foliage -preferably globular in shape- at the outermost tips of the branches. The bark of this tree is pale to dark greyish in colour. Those branches are manipulated over a certain period, in order to make them bend back down to the base of the trunk, akin to the shape of the Thai number six (), hence the designation. This type of bonsai-like tree is difficult to trim and shape, and it requires skill and perseverance to do so. See also POSTAGE STAMPS.
