Dark-horned Lantern-fly

Common name for a species of planthopper, that occurs primarily in Southeast Asia and with the scientific designation Pyrops spinolae. This fairly large insect has an upwardly curved, snout-like projection on the front of its head, which is black with tiny white spots above and a cream-coloured greyish-brown to orangey at the bottom, as well as on the lower face. It has green forewings with a pattern of dark-green to blackish rectangular spots, as well as contrasting white patches, of which the centre is yellow to orangey, and which are rather elongated on the anterior part of the wings, yet more rounded in shape on the posterior half. At the base, over half of the hindwings are bright yellow in colour, whereas the rest towards the tips, is black. See also TRAVEL PICTURES.
